What is a quality hallmark?

A quality (fineness) hallmark denotes the gold (or platinum) content of the jewellery, the higher the content the more it is worth.

In Britain, the 1973 Hallmarking Act introduced a new fineness stamp. After that time, for example, rather than 9 carat gold having a [9] stamp, it will have the fineness stamp of [375].

Typical stamps found on British gold are:

Hallmark  9 Carat Gold  or  9 Carat Gold  =  9 Carat Gold
Hallmark  14 Carat Gold  or  14 Carat Gold  =  14 Carat Gold
Hallmark  18 Carat Gold  or  18 Carat Gold  =  18 Carat Gold
Hallmark  22 Carat Gold  or  22 Carat Gold  =  22 Carat Gold

Typical stamps found on British platinum are:

  Hallmark  Platinum - Fineness 850  =  Platinum - Fineness 850
  Hallmark  Platinum - Fineness 900  =  Platinum - Fineness 900
  Hallmark  Platinum - Fineness 950  =  Platinum - Fineness 950 (UK standard)
  Hallmark  Platinum - Fineness 999  =  Platinum - Fineness 999
